Using Moisture Data to Optimize Fertilizer Application

On my farm in Nebraska, digital soil moisture sensors have become an integral part of our nutrient management system. We used to rely on the calendar for fertilizing, but now we base decisions on the actual condition of the soil. This not only reduces fertilizer costs but also improves efficiency.

After rain or irrigation—when the soil is saturated—applied fertilizers dissolve and reach the root zone more effectively. During dry periods, we avoid application to prevent waste. According to Penn State University, this approach can reduce over-fertilization and minimize environmental pollution (Penn State, 2023).

Digital control doesn't just provide precision — it gives confidence that every dollar invested is working for results.
